Established in November, 1997 as part of the College of Natural Sciences, the department has been re-assigned to become a part of the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009 for the first time in Korea and started receiving new students through the new College in 2010.

The department offers a general liberal course during the first year for students who wish to become veterinary doctors and major courses are taught during the second year to form the basis of their studies. This is to foster veterinary doctors who are able to serve the public good and live up to required ethical standards. After gaining 80 or more credits in courses of pre-med and gaining an average grade of D+ or higher, the student can proceed to continue studies with the department of veterinary medicine. If these conditions are not met, the student will be required to stay in the second year of pre-med for veterinary studies.
